WordPress is just an amazing platform to do virtually anything. Through WordPress, you can run a full-fledged business or use it as a daily journal. A friend of mine in which I was helping set up a blog recently emailed me this question:
Where do I find the Category ID to set up this widget?
That’s a great question because not a lot of plugins ask for this to insert into a field in certain plugins settings. As it turns out, the Category ID has been right in front of you if you visited the admin dashboard. Now, I will show you how to find it.
First things first, take for example WPOutcast, I actually need to use a category ID to showcase certain categories on the homepage. Here is what the widget asks for (see below).
To get this ID, go to your category page and click edit on the category that you need the ID for.
Look up in the address bar for the category ID. I circled it in red.
So, the ID I need to use if I want to change the category shown in one of my homepage widgets would be number 16. (ex. category&tag_ID=16&post_type)
The same thing goes for a post ID. Each week, for the editorial picks widget on the homepage, I have to use a post ID new make my new blog posts appear.
The post ID is always a long number. For example even as I am writing this blog post, I can view the post ID number it will be assigned as soon as I hit the publish button like so.
If you have any questions about this topic, do ask away in the comment section. Don’t forget to share this blog post if you found it helpful.
